References are made by scholars to varnasramadharma as the forerunner of the caste system. The Mahatma did not enter
into controversies to search for the
origins of the. Caste system. He admitted that he did
not know and did not feel the
Necessity to know its origins. But he was certain that
the modern caste system
and the ancient varnasramadharma have nothing in common. One is the
Antithesis of the other. so he said that his social system had nothing to do with
Caste. He believed lhat varnasramadharma, is the law
of life'and not an unnatural system like caste. He conceived of a better
social order characterized by
Varnasrama, and preached
for its revival.
By varnasrama Gandhi
understood the four old-division of society based on occupations. As such, rhe varnas'mark four universal
occupations-imparting knowledge, defending
the defenseress, carrying on
agricurture and commerce and
performing service through physical
labour. These occupations are common to mankind, he said, and their recognition and use as the law of life in regulating
economic relations by the ancient Hindus was a noble innovation. lts
application ensured hereditary skill, established
defined spheres of action, avoided unworthy competitions, and prevented one
from pressing upon one's neighbours. lt
admitted no status distinctions, no
restrictions of intermarriage and inter-dining and guaranteed each the fruits
of his labour.
This is 'law of
man's being' and Gandhi believed that the reversion of the society lo lhe
Varnas,'arna stage would immensely
benefit
mankind. He even prescribed it to the Christians and
the Muslims. The method he suggested for
this transformation was the removal of
status inequality from among the castes anddissociation of untouchability with
the system. These, he considered, were not essential attributes but
excrescences. Once they are removed the society would automatically revert to Varnasramadharma in its pristine purity. Gandhi made it clear
that he advocated in favour
of a society where there would be four broad universal functional groups, all
equal in social status and following pafticular occupations
